4 JUNE 1942
CRASH OF A WIRRAWAY
AT MACKAY, QLD
WIrraway
Wirraway A20-494 crashed during a night takeoff from Mackay airfield in north Queensland on the 4th June 1942. It was flown by J M Davidson and Flt/Sgt Hodges. Both crew members survived the crash. They crashed into the dispersal bay at Mackay Airfield. Dean Davidson believes that the dispersal bay may have been somewhere near where the "piano keys" are now, on Runway 32 at Mackay Aifield.
The aircraft had engine trouble on the previous day when leaving Townsville for Cairns.
