CRASH OF A BRISTOL BEAUFORT
AT BENGWARDEN MASTHEAD BOMBING RANGE
ON 4 APRIL 1943

 

RAAF Mark VI Bristol Beaufort, A9-51 (RAF Serial No. T9603) of No 1 Operational Training Unit 1 OTU, crashed at Bengwarden masthead bombing range and was destroyed by fire on 4 April 1943.

Three crew were killed and two injured as follows:-

KILLED INJURED

F/Lt Jack Haythorn (722) (Pilot - Instructor)
Sgt. Ross Nicholas George Zimbulis (406419) (Navigator) - died later that day

P/O James Warren Hall (415525) (2nd Pilot)
Sgt. Frank Edwards (415008) (Wireless AIr Gunner)
Sgt. Geoffrey Keith Bennewith (415004) (Wireless Air Gunner)

This aircraft was originally delivered to the RAAF in May 1942.
