US ARMY TRUCK PARK
KESSELS ROAD, MOUNT GRAVATT?

hline.gif (2424 bytes)

In about November 1942, the US Army constructed a large Truck Park at Kessels Road, Mount Gravatt? in the vicinity of A-Mart, Schweppes and the other shops along that stretch of Kessels Road. Some of the Army Igloos that were part of this Truck Park are still located behind the hardware shop next door to A-Mart.

This land was originally purchased by Maria Kessels in 1868. Maria and her son established a farm on the land. She sold it to Alfred Hughes on 8 March 1871. Maria's husband was Nicholas Joseph Kessels, JP who was a Councillor in the Yeerongpilly Shire.

UPDATE:- I now believe that the Truck Park on Kessels Road was the 4 Australian Ordnance Vehicle Park (4AOVP). Perhaps the US Truck Park was located somewhere else at Mount Gravatt or they moved out and 4AOVP took over.
