Anthony Wornum from the European Genealogy Message area on Fidonet sent me the following information on the Selden family from the unpublished autobiography of George Grey Wornum, who was descended from Elizabeth Selden of Virginia:
"The Selden part of the family starts about 1210 in Angmering, Sussex, and Fecamp, Normandy. The name comes from two Anglo-Saxon words; Selk, meaning silkweed and Dene meaning wood. The name was spelled De Selkeden until the reign of Henry VIII when the prefix was dropped and it was simplified to Selden.
The Selden family of Virginia claim descent from the parents of John Selden, the Jurist, legal antiquary and oriental scholar, who was born in 1584 at Salvington, in the parish of West Tarring, Sussex."

"His father, also John Selden held a small farm. It is said that his accomplishments as a violin player gained him his wife, whose social position was somewhat superior to his own. She was Margaret, the only child of Thomas Baker of Rustington, and was more or less remotely descended from a knightly family of the same name in Kent.
"It was however, as a scholar and writer that Selden won his reputation both amongst his contemporaries and with posterity. His first work, an account of the civil administration of England before the Norman Conquest, is said to have been completed when he was only twenty three years of age.
"The discontents which a few years later broke out into civil war were already forcing themselves on public attention, and it is pretty certain that, although he was not in parliament, he was the instigator and perhaps the draftsman of the memorable protestation on the rights and privileges of the House affirmed by the Commons on the 18th of December 1621. He was with several of the members committed to prison, at first in the Tower.
"In 1623 he was returned to the House of Commons for the Borough of Lancaster, and sat with Coke, Noy and Pym on Sergean Glanville's election committee.
"In 1628 he was returned to the third parliament of Charles 1 for Ludgershall in Wiltshire, and had a large and important share in drawing up and carrying the Petition of Right. In the session of 1629 he was one of the members mainly responsible for the tumultuous passage in the House of Commons of the resolution against the illegal levy of tonnage and poundage, and he was sent once more to the Tower, and there he remained for eight months.
"Some years before, he had been appointed steward to the Earl of Kent, to whose seat, Wrest in Bedfordshire he now retired.
"After the death of the Earl of Kent in 1639 Selden lived permanently under the same roof with his widow. It is believed that he was married to her, although their marriage does not seem to have ever been publicly acknowledged."
However, also taken from the Encyclopaedia Britannica, under KENT, EARLS OF:
"After Richard's death without issue, his half brother and heir Henry (1495- 1562) did not assume the title of Earl of Kent on account of his poverty; but in 1572 Henry's grandson Reginald who had been member of Parliament for Weymouth was recognised as Earl; he was followed by his brother Henry and then by another brother, Charles. Charles' son Henry, the 8th Earl married Elizabeth (1581-1651) daughter of Gilbert Talbot, 7th Earl of Shrewsbury. This lady, who was an authoress, took for her second husband the jurist John Selden."
At the time of their marriage Elizabeth was sixty years of age and John Selden around fifty five. One would assume that he was appointed Steward to the Earl of Kent due to the fact that they were related on his mother's side as appointments like that which carried a lot of responsibility were seldom granted outside the family.
The founder of the family in Virginia was Samuel Selden, a lawyer who, according to the Elizabeth City Records, came to Virginia with his family in 1699. They settled there and for five generations were prominent members of the community both in the Army and connected with the State Government.
Now I quote from Hallum's History of Arkansas on the subject of my grandmother's tragic marriage:
"In 1821, Joseph Selden succeeded the brilliant Robert P. Letcher of Kentucky, as one of the associate judges of the superior court of the territory. Early in May, 1824, he joined Judge Scott in a social game of cards with two ladies in Little Rock; during the progress of the game Judge Selden made some remark to one of the ladies, to which Judge Scott took umbrage and demanded an apology in imperious terms, which was refused.
A challenge to mortal combat was accepted by Judge Selden, who designated an island in the Mississippi river near Helena as the place, and pistols as the weapons, at ten paces. That polished scholar, writer end jurist, James Woodson Bates, brother to Attorney-General Bates of President Lincoln's cabinet, acted as the friend and second of Judge Selden, and Hon Nimrod Menifee acted as the friend, second and surgeon for Judge Scott. At the first fire Judge Selden fell mortally wounded - a strange unhappy and unfortunate occurrence; unhappy for the principal actors, and still more unfortunate for the fame of Arkansas.
Two judges of the highest tribunal in the jurisdiction, sworn conservators of the peace, setting law at defiance.
Tradition has it that his wife found the challenge in the judge's coat pocket, and was locked up in a room to prevent her interfering. She escaped, so they say, just in time to row her dead husband's body back from the island to the mainland. She had, when the tragedy occurred, a daughter Elizabeth aged one (to become my grandmother) and a second child , Josephine, was born posthumously.
The first years of her widowhood were spent at the home of her late husband's mother at Tree Hill, Arkansas. In 1827 she married George Long, an Englishman, recently appointed Professor of Ancient Languages to the lately established University of Virginia, and in July 1828 came with her daughters and husband to settle in England, his native country. She had by him four sons and a daughter who died in infancy. Harriet died, aged thirty nine at Highgate on 18 June 1841 and is buried at Hornsey Churchyard. Her black servant Jacob whom she brought from America, died in August of grief, according to the legend. Professor P.A. Bruce has several pages in his History of the University of Virginia devoted to George Long and Harriet Selden.

Peter-- Thank you for that long account. I knew about the VA Seldens and about John, but not in such detail. My husband descends from the Thomas Selden line in New England.
Here's the history I mentioned. It's really nothing but the "begats" so it doesn't take up much space:
"Records of de Selkeden, later, Selden, have been found at Ecclesden, Sussex, England, commencing with a JOHN de SELKEDEN (1) assumed to have been born about 1210 and died in 1308.
2. WILLIAM de SELKEDEN, born about 1235, married a widow, Agatha.

13. WILLIAM SELDEN, Jr., born 1548, died in 1621, married in 1576 to Mary Appes who died in 1616.
14. JOHN SELDEN, born about 1585, probably at Wadhurst, died in 1640. Married on November 24, 1612 to Mary Baldock, daughter of William and Elizabeth Baldock. They had 11 children.
William bap. Oct 7, 1613, died May 1, 1663.
Edward born in 1615.
*Thomas bap March 1616/17, died in 1655 at Hartford, Conn.
John bap Aug 15, 1639.
Richard bap Feb 10, 1621/22.
Robert bap March 13 1624/25.
Mary bap Oct 21, 1627, bur Feb 6, 1636/37.
Joseph bap Dec 27, 1629.
Francis bap Oct 7, 1632, bur on Sept 29, 1640.
A Son bap Jan 10, 1634/35.
Nicholas bap Jan 29, 1636/37."
From there, it goes on down the line of Thomas until 1973 when it was compiled (by William R. Selden of Kenmore, NY) giving more narrative for the lines the compiler was following, but does not follow anyone other than Thomas' descent either in England or the US.
