SRD CONNECTION
Service Reconnaissance Department - Volume 1
by Shirley Gleghorn
"They gave us
their Youth,
They gave us their Courage,
They gave us our Freedom"
A social history of the "Z" Special Unit in WWII. Published to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Victory in the Pacific, 2005.
It was widely known through official channels that all secret files were to be destroyed immediately at the end of the war. The SRD volunteers swore an Oath of Silence before they were accepted into their clandestine wartime service to secretly defend Australia from Japanese invasion. The small groups of Z Special Unit operators were under orders from one of the three senior officers who was the only officer that knew the full orders.
