The 23rd Australian Infantry Brigade was camped in the Cowra area in about late 1940. The 2/12 Field Ambulance was supporting the Brigade. The 23rd Australian Infantry Brigade relocated with the 2/12 Field Ambulance from their camp at Cowra to Winnellie just south of the RAAF Darwin airfield in the Northern Territory in March 1941. The 23rd Brigade was part of the 12th Division (Northern Territory Force) under Major-General A.S. Allen. The other two Brigades comprising Northern Territory Force at that point in time were the 13th Brigade and the 19th Brigade.
