REUBEN WALDER

I received the following E-Mail from Owen JOHN Walder  john.walder@dsl.pipex.com on 10 May 1997:-

Hello there,

I received information about your Walder Family pages from my son, Alistair, at Leeds University. I am John Walder, and live in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, and was born in 1940.

My family orginated in the Scaynes Hill area, between Haywards Heath and Chailey. My late father, Albert John Walder was born 15.3.1907 at Scaynes Hill. He was one of some eight or nine children and his father was a Reuben Walder of Scaynes Hill.

I have not done any research into the family and I do not remember much of my grandfather, except he was in his late 70s or early 80s when he died at the end of the 1950s.

There are a number of Walders in the mid-Sussex area whether we were related to the the branch you have been investigating is debatable, I have no recollection of any relatives in the Horsham area and I am aware of others of the same name in Haywards Heath who were not directly related to our family.

Hope this is of assistance, if I find out anything further I will be in touch and I will certainly keep an eye on your web pages.

John

Hi Peter,

It's been some time since I was in touch, but I have been doing a bit of research through the summer.

My grandfather, Reuben, was born in1876, and as far as I can see he was one of 10 children born to Jane (formerly Belchamber) and James Walder of Lindfield.

Reuben married Emily Hards on 8.7.1899 and they had seven children, Walter Edward (b1899), Ivy Jane, (1901), Stanley William (1903), Donald Clifford (1904), my father Albert John (1907) , Harold and Doris.

Reuben's father James was born in 1832 and he married Jane Belchamber on 28.10.1854, they had ten children, Albert (1855), Walter (1861), Mary (1863), John (1866), Emma (1869), Rhoda (1871), James (1872), Alice (1873), REUBEN (1876) and Agnes (1877).

JAMES, I believe, was the son of Jesse WALDER who was born in 1795 and married Martha ?? , who was born in Plumpton in 1803. They apparently had 5 children, Joseph (1823), JAMES (1832), Benjamin (1837), Jesse (1844) and Reuben (1846).

I have come to stop at present and cannot find out where or when, or if indeed, Jesse and Martha were married. If you know anything further it would be appreciated.

Meantime have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

John Walder, Bexhill on Sea.

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the recent E-Mail, it will be interesting to see if anything further comes to light.

Hope you had a good trip, you got home before the bad weather set in! We are now in the grip of ice, snow and arctic winds, but it's not supposed to last long.

If any further information comes to hand I will let you know.

Cheers,

Hi Peter

Long time since we last spoke. Can you note my change of server and address.

It is now john.walder@dsl.pipex.com

Incidentally I like the look of your site now.

I have come to a standstill in recent months with my research.

I have established that Reuben b. 7.4.1876 was the son of James b. 1832 who married Jane Belchamber b 1836 on 28.10.1854 James was the son of Jesse Walder b 1795 and Martha ? possibly Martha Carter b 1803 from Plumpton in East Sussex.

However searches of parish records for both Lindfield and Plumpton have failed to locate any trace of their marriage or respective baptisms.

I wonder if anyone else can throw any light on this.

Wishing you all the best for Christmas and the Millennium

John at Bexhill on Sea
