In June 2019, the "Lost 52 Project" comprising a team of ocean explorers located the remains of US Navy submarine USS Grayback SS-208 which was lost with 80 souls on board 50 nautical miles south of Okinawa in February 1944 whilst on its final mission. This was the fifth US Submarine that the project had located. They hoped to locate all 52 USN submarines that were lost during WWII.

USS Grayback was one of many US Submarines that were based at the large US Navy Submarine base at New Farm in Brisbane during WWII.
