At the outbreak of World War II in Europe, the Royal Australian Navy depot in Darwin in the Northern Territory was named HMAS Penguin IV. On 1 August 1940 it was formally commissioned as HMAS Melville.

 

The large naval wireless station at HMAS Coonawarra was part of HMAS Melville.
