Crash of a P-40 Kittyhawk at Richmond, NSW on 15 February 1942

CRASH OF A P-40 KITTYHAWK
AT RICHMOND, NSW
ON 15 FEBRUARY 1942

On 15 February 1942, USAAF P-40E FY40-600 Kittyhawk crashed on take-off at Richmond in New South Wales, damaging the wing tip, aileron, and entire left landing gear. The pilot was 2nd Lt. William "Bill" Levitan 0-427754 (or Leveton) of "B" Flight 13th Pursuit Squadron (Provisional). The Kittyhawk was on its way to Maylands in Western Australia to be loaded onto USS Langley. Both pilot and aircraft missed the be loaded onto USS Langley. It was salvaged by the 43rd Materiel Squadron on 24 February 1942.

2nd Lt Levitan would later fly #73 "The Little Virgin" (P-40E FY40-677) in "A" Flight 9th Pursuit Squadron.
