My father, James W. Hyde, was in the 3rd Bomb Group in New Guinea. He enlisted in '39 and retired in '64. I have tried my best to get his old photo album but it has, apparently, been lost.
He started out as a mechanic on an A-20, wound up a crew chief on a B-25. He knew Pappy Gunn well.
Dad spent his 20th birthday, February 3rd on a liberty ship off the coast of Australia. He didn't leave New Guinea until spring of '44.
He was from Leland, Mississippi. John Allen Collier owned the Dunleith Plantation where my grandfather was the general manager. Mr Collier was quite a name during WWII.

He talked quite a lot about Pappy Gunn; but no specific stories that I can recall. Townsville sounds familiar. He spent some time in a hospital in Australia but I can't recall, off hand, where it was. He met his fututre brother-in-law in that hospital; he had been hurt on the 'canal'.

Paul Nichols is a friend of mine. Paul flew B-24s with the 43rd Bomb Group. He is doing well these days.
p112nick@webtv.net in case you care to converse with him.
