CATHERINE CAPLICE

= PATRICK SLATTERY

I received the following E-Mail from James F. Power (power@gis.net) on 3 March 1997:-

Hello Peter,

My mother's family history has a strong base in Ballyporeen, Tipperary. The records from Assumption Church indicate that:-

Patrick Slattery married Catherine Caplice on February 27, 1827
Witnesses - Daniel O'Brien and (?)

Children:
1. Joanna b. June 16, 1828 ss. Daniel O'Brien/Ellen White

(this I think could be my great-grandmother) This may be the Joanna who married Edmund Barry and they lived in the house across from the parish house in Ballyporeen. Their three children were - James, Mary, and Catherine. Mary moved to Boston, Mass, U.S. and there she married a former resident of Ballyporeen, James McGrath (son of Peter McGrath and Mary Casey). James McGrath and Mary Barry were my grandparents.

Other children of Patrick and Catherine:
2. Catherine b.November 14, 1830 ss. (?)/Catherine Clancy
3. John b. July 2, 1833 ss. John Bolan/Ellen Condon
4. Patrick b. April 22, 1836 ss. Thomas Ryan/Catherine Gorman
5. William b. April 22, 1836 ss. Martin Casey/Mary O'Brien
6. Michael b. September 23, 1838 ss. Thomas Downy/Mary Meany
7. Mary b. July 24, 1842 ss. Maurice Condon/Joanna Sweeney

Other names in my Ballyporeen background are Barry, McGrath, Casey, and Luddy.

Also from the records of Assumption Church in Ballyporeen:

William Fennell married Catherine Caplice (another Catherine). Their children were Robert, Honora, Margaret, Bridget, David, Patrick, & William.

Most of these Fennell children moved to America. I knew Robert, William, Honora, and Patrick.

Do any of these match with your records?

I live in a town called Wellesley which is a suburb of Boston. However, when the McGrath's and Barry's came to this country they lived in a Boston neighborhood called South Boston where I was born.

Other Caplice facts from Ballyporeen:

Two stones in the old cemetery read -

"In loving memory of Michael Caplice, Burncourt,
died 5 May 1932
also his wife Winifred
died 4 May 1964"

"Erected by Honora Caplice in memory of her husband Maurice of Coolentlar
who died March 15, 1845 aged 50 years
also James Caplice who departed May 19, 1847 age 15 years,
also David Caplice Sept. 22, 1849 age 20 years.
Honora departed Sept. 24, 1849 age 36 years"

I will read over the list I down loaded from your web site to see if I can put together any more info.
