Mary Caplice, aged 16 years, came to Australia with
her mother Catherine and her 20 year old brother James, on the ship Oriana which left
Plymouth on 6 July 1887 and arrived at Maryborough on 14 October 1887. They all left the
ship on 15 October and travelled on to Howard to stay with their married daughter and
sister Catherine O'Doherty (nee Caplice).
Mary was living at Howard at the time of her marriage on 28 February 1892. Witnesses at her marriage were M.J. Geraghty and Frances Manski. Mary's Marriage Certificate Reg. No. is 92/001369 Qld Country.
Capless is a French (or Norman) name. Ballyporeen is a small village in Tipperary to which President Ronald Reagan of the USA has also traced his descendants. Mary's father Thomas Capless died when he was 40 years old.
Her mother eventually re-married to a John McCabe in Maryborough on 11 Oct 1891. Mary died on 17 November 1937 and was buried at Maryborough Cemetery on 18 November 1937, Grave No. 116 N.
