BAIRNSDALE REMOTE
RECEIVING STATION
AND AMMUNITION BUNKERS
NEAR
BAIRNSDALE AIRFIELD
BAIRNSDALE, VIC
DURING WWII
A Remote Receiving Station Building was built near Bairnsdale Airfield in Victoria during WW2. It was built to Drawing No. 42/43/168 (does anyone have a copy of the drawing?). It is located about 4kms SSW of Bairnsdale Airfield on the western side of Bengworden Road near the intersection with Leathams Road.
A military document dated 2 December 1943 shows details of the utilization of a number of semi-underground buildings including the Bairnsdale Remote Receiving building which was listed as "Completed but not in use". Unlike some other semi-underground buildings (or bunkers) this one at Bairnsdale did not include air conditioning and power plants.

A site historical board on Bairnsdale Airfield and surrounds during WW2 is on display at the Bairnsdale Airfield. It indicated that this Underground Operations Room was comparable to the one at Mallacoota. It also indicates that there are remains of WW2 operations in the Moormung Forest west of the Bairnsdale Airfield, and also to the east of Phillip's Lane, Lucknow. And ammunition and bomb dumps located along Humphrys Road and Aerodrome Road (see below).
