On 20 June 1998 I asked Joseph Baugher could he help me with any information on a P-38 that crash landed in Townsville, Australia during WWII just behind where my parents house.  Here's his response:-

This is going to be a tough one. Since the plane seems to have not been all that seriously damaged, the historical records might not say anything. The best place to start looking is the Air Force Historical Research Agency, located at Maxwell AFB in Alabama. They have a web site at http://www.au.af.mil/au/afhra/. Since you know the unit to which the plane belonged, this might be a start. It would help a lot if you knew the plane's serial number.

Thanks,
Joe Baugher
