2/4 Independent Company was formed in about 1942 and was trained at No. 7 Infantry Training Centre at Tidal River on Wilson's Promontory in Victoria.

2/4 Independent Company was later re-designated as the 2/4 Commando Squadron, 2/9 Cavalry (Commando) Regiment.
