CRASH OF A P-40 KITTYHAWK
AT EDGE HILL, CAIRNS, QLD
RAAF P-40E Kittyhawk, A29-156 (#41-5598), from 75 Squadron was flying in formation at 1,200 feet above Cairns. It broke formation, out of control, and crashed into a house in Pease Street, Edge Hill, Cairns on 26 November 1942.
Fortunately the wooden house was not occupied at the time of the crash. The house and all its contents were totally destroyed by the fire resulting from the crash.
The pilot, A/Sgt. Jeffrey Graham Cornfoot (205780), aged 22 years was killed. He was buried in the Military section of the Cairns Cemetery. Grave Reference/Panel Number: Plot A. Row A. Grave 5.
Jeffrey Cornfoot was the son of Mrs. E. Cornfoot, of Toorak, Victoria.
Kittyhawk A29-156 had been delivered to the RAAF in September 1942.
